But here’s the part that matters: the domestic Japanese market grew only 2.8%, while the overseas market grew 26%. Overseas revenue — 2.17 trillion yen — now makes up 56% of the entire industry, and the AJA expects that gap to keep widening.

Read that again. More than half of the money keeping your favorite studios alive comes from fans outside Japan. When you subscribe to a legal streaming service, buy a licensed manga, or fill a movie theater, Japanese producers see it — and it changes what gets made next.

Latin America broke the records to prove it

If anyone doubted how much Latin America matters now, 2025 settled it. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle scored the biggest opening ever for a Japanese anime film in Brazil (1.15 million admissions, US$4.88M) and in Mexico (2.35 million admissions, US$9.97M), on its way to roughly 117.9 billion yen worldwide. Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc added over 27.8 billion yen globally. Crunchyroll, meanwhile, has named Brazil and Mexico among its key growth markets and shifted resources toward its Mexico office.

One widely shared claim says 60% of Gen Z and Gen Alpha in Brazil watch anime multiple times a week — a striking number, but I could not confirm a primary source, so treat it as unverified.

Japan’s government is betting on you too

Under the revised Cool Japan strategy, Japan’s official target is to roughly triple overseas content sales to 20 trillion yen by 2033. Anime — and the fan cultures around it, including BL — are explicitly part of that national bet.

So where does BL sit in all this?

BL is a compact but consistently growing corner of Japan’s otaku economy — commonly estimated at around 20 billion yen (~US$130M) a year based on Yano Research Institute’s otaku market studies (exact definitions vary between reports, so precise comparisons are unverified). Small next to shōnen blockbusters, yes. But look at the direction: in the fan-voted BL Award 2025, run from Japan, 21,941 valid votes were cast — and roughly one in ten came in a language other than Japanese. Overseas BL fans aren’t just watching from a distance anymore; they’re already participating in Japan’s own rankings.

And on the publishing side, Brazil set a national record with nearly 700 manga volumes published in 2025, with BL now an established segment of major publishers’ catalogs.

The takeaway

For decades, overseas fans were an afterthought in Japanese content planning. The 2024–2025 numbers ended that era. Every legal purchase, every vote, every stream from São Paulo, Mexico City, or Manila is now a data point that Japanese publishers and studios actively track. The main character of this industry’s next decade is you.

Sources: AJA / Anime Industry Report 2025 preliminary figures · Nikkei · Variety · Deadline (Cool Japan target) · Animate Times (Demon Slayer worldwide) · Chainsaw Man official · Forbes (Crunchyroll) · Yano Research Institute · BL Award 2025 results (PR TIMES) · Biblioteca Brasileira de Mangás

What Japan’s record-breaking industry data means for overseas fans — and where BL fits in.
